MMP-2 (Fibroblast gelatinase, gelatinase A) is a type IV collagenase with an important role in breakdown of the extracellular matrix. It has also been implicated in cancer cell invasion and angiogenesis. MMP-9 (neutrophil gelatinase, gelatinase B) cleaves the alpha 2 chain of type I collagen, collagen types III, IV, V, and gelatins. MMP-9 is found in human fibrosarcoma cells and produced in human bone osteoclasts and, together with MMP-1 and cysteine proteinases, may be involved in bone collagen degradation. Activity is measured by excitation at 280nm and emission at 360nm. |
