Cathepsin L is a lysosomal cysteine protease with an important role in initiating protein degradation. Cathepsin L is also upregulated in several cancers and has been suggested as a drug target. In addition, extracellular secretion of Cathepsin L by tumors implicates it as a potential serum biomarker for cancer progression. In an in vitro bone culture system it inhibits the release of hydroxyproline and Ca(2+) and prevents bone loss in ovariectomized mice (~50 mg/kg). |
